Warsaw

Warsaw, the capital of Poland, is also the country’s biggest city with inhabitants numbering 1.7 million people. It is the seat of the central government, and is the country’s economic, administrative, political, and cultural centre. It lies in the geographical centre of the country, giving excellent access to the rest of the country.

The images of Warsaw as a bleak concrete jungle, a wasteland of Soviet-era housing with little appeal remain only with those who haven’t visited this vibrant city in the past 15 years. The city does undoubtedly have its fair share of problems and whole swathes of its suburbs are indeed dominated by the less-than-imaginative creations of communist-era architects. But there is far more to this metropolis, with a string of things to see, an impressive cultural scene and an increasingly lively nightlife. Warsaw is a real survivor – the city’s current day existence, especially as a new addition to the European Union’s list of capital cities, is impressive in itself.

Though the Cold War phase observed some disregard of Warsaw’s visual beauty, with some constituents of twentieth century Stalinist architecture piercing the metropolis as well as allowing the build-up of serious traffic, the spirit of its elegant parks and palaces has never been mislaid. Neither has its history been forgotten with many museums and monuments being dedicated to the Nazi era and the holocaust, as well as to other periods of the city’s history.

Looking for a bit of Ireland in Warsaw- Cork Irish Pub, aleje Niepodleglosci 19, where the big screen TV is almost more important than a pint of Guinness on a Match day.
