Rome Ciampino

Rome, home to the ancient Roman Empire as well as the Catholic Church, is known for its art, history, culture and shopping.  Plan to visit the sights, wander through the ancient streets and plazas and see where the Pope addresses his flock.  Keep in mind that the summers are hot; so you may want to find a cool place to rest in the afternoon.  Tourist information can be obtained at:  www.enjoyrome.com.

Airport Transportation

The Ciampino airport is serviced by bus, train and taxi service.  Buses depart from outside the airport terminal for the trip to the city center.  Buses also service the local train station from where you can get a train to the city center.   Taxis can be hailed outside the terminal for the 30-minute trip to town, and cost about €35.

Explore Rome

Most of the sights are located between the Centro Storico (historical center) and the area of Roma Antica (ancient Rome).   Visit the sights:  Colosseum; Pantheon; St. Peter’s Basilica, noted for Michelangelo’s Pieta as well as the spectacular cityviews as seen from the dome; Spanish Steps, beautiful staircase used to approach church of Trinita dei Monti; Baths of Caracalla and Diocletian, ancient Roman baths; the Roman Forum; the Vatican Museums, featuring great Western and Egyptian art; Sistine Chapel, with Michelangelo’s famous ceiling; Fontana di Trevi, a fabulous fountain of mythical sea creatures and cascading waters; and Palazzo Venezia, former residence of Mussolini that now houses a museum.  As you wander around the city, discover:  Piazza Navona, a 17th century plaza with the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Four Rivers Fountain) at its center; Campo dei Fiori (Field of Flowers) flower and vegetable market; Piazza del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo and lined with palaces; and Villa Borghese, a beautiful park with a villa housing an art museum.
