Prague

Prague, one of the world’s most beautiful cities, has a population of about 1.19 million. It is an important European intellectual and cultural centre, well known for its extraordinary architecture and music. Bear in mind that Prague is a very popular destination in July and August so try to visit early or late in the summer. Tourist information can be obtained from the following website: www.pis.cz.

Airport Transportation:

Ruzyne Airport is 20km (12 miles) northwest of the city and is serviced by bus and taxi services. Bus No. 119 takes you as far as the Dejuika Metro Station, costing about 12kc for the 30-minute trip. From there you will need to get the metro into the city centre. Alternatively, a private minibus service, Cedaz, takes you further into the city in about the same time without the hassle of having to switch over to the Metro and costs about 90kc. This service runs daily every half hour between 5:30am and 9pm.

Taxi service can be found outside the terminal, but be aware that only taxis owned by FIX are authorized by the city to pick up passengers at the airport. A trip to the city centre should be about 600kc. Another note of warning – many taxis waiting at stands in the city have altered their meters and are just waiting to take your money. Best advice: telephone ahead and order a taxi.

Explore Prague:

Prague Castle, the official residence of the President, dominates the city skyline from its perch high above the city. Check out the miniature houses of Golden Lane, St. George’s Basilica, The Royal Palace’s Vladislav Hall with its splendid Gothic wooden vaulted ceiling, and St. Vitus Cathedral. Old Town Square, lined with shops, interesting architecture and cafes, is home to the Church of St. Nicholas (one of the finest baroque buildings in Prague) and the Old Town Hall with its famous astronomical clock tower. Staronova Synagoga is the oldest synagogue in Europe and is near the Old Jewish Cemetery. See too Charles Bridge, a stone bridge studded with 30 statues of saints, which is one of the city’s most famous sights.
