Boston, city, capital of Massachusetts and seat of Suffolk County, on Boston Bay (an inlet of Massachusetts Bay), at the entrance of the Charles River , in the eastern part of the state. Boston is the largest city in Massachusetts and New England and serves as the commercial, financial, and cultural centre of the six-state region. The city is situated on a wonderful natural harbour opening onto Massachusetts Bay. At one time the city occupied a relatively narrow cape of land, limiting city expansion, but wide-ranging filling of tidal flats has greatly enlarged the city's land area. Boston not only governs much of New England but also exerts influence on the rest of the country through its banks, financial institutions, insurance companies, and educational institutions.

America’s sixth busiest airport, Logan Airport (BOS) is located in East Boston, serving the city of Boston and the greater New England area.
